“Queen Esther” by John Irving follows Esther Nacht, born in Vienna in 1905, who is orphaned after her father dies en route to Maine and her mother is murdered by anti-Semites in Portland. Unable to find her a Jewish adoptive family, Dr. Larch places Esther with the philanthropic Winslows, a New England family who oppose anti-Semitism. Grateful and fiercely loyal, Esther later reconnects with her Viennese roots. The novel concludes in Jerusalem in 1981, when she is seventy-six.
